Hike through the Bletterbachschlucht Gorge

This is an interesting hike from a natural history and geological perspective. It leads to the UNESCO World Heritage Geoparc Bletterbach geological park. Hiking through the impressive canyon and the opportunity to immerse oneself in the history of Earth’s creation are the highlights of this unique tour.

Take highway´s exit “Bolzano Nord/Eggental”, turn right direction Bolzano/Bozen, after about 0,5 km on roundabout keep left and head towards Val d’Ega (SS 241). Keep driving up to Ponte Nova. At Ponte Nova’s crossroads, turn to the right and continue to Nova Ponente (30 minutes from the Bozen Nord/Eggental autobahn exit). At the roundabout in Nova Ponente, take the third exit towards Monte S. Pietro. After 6 km, turn left and follow the street to Maria Weissenstein.

The hike begins at Tyrol’s largest pilgrimage site, the Maria Weißenstein monastery, which is well worth a visit. Numerous votive tablets demonstrate how, for centuries, the devout sought refuge and mercy from the mother of god in times of worry or distress. Trail S leads to the Schmiederalm and Lahneralm Alpine farms and the Bletterbach gorge. To return, follow trail [3] into the Kösertal valley, then take trails [E5], [3], [4], and [9] back to the starting point. An exciting and adventurous day is guaranteed!
