Hike to the Christomannos Monument via the Hirzelsteig Trail

This panoramic trail leads to the Christomannos monument, a bronze eagle directly in front of the mighty walls of the Catinaccio/Rosengarten massif in remembrance of Theodor Christomannos. His life’s work was the construction of the famed Dolomitenstraße road from Nova Levante/Welschnofen to Cortina.

Take highway's exit “Bolzano Nord/Eggental”, turn right direction Bolzano/Bozen, after about 0,5 km on roundabout keep left and head towards Val d'Ega (SS 241). Keep driving up to Ponte Nova. At Ponte Nova’s crossroads, turn to the left in direction to Nova Levante and continue until parking Paolina in Carezza (about 30 min. from highway toll booth).

The route leads from the mountain station of the Paolina chairlift (2,125 m) on trail [539] to the Christomannos monument. To return to the Paolina chairlift, take trail [549] to the Kölner Hütte mountain hut (2,337 m) and continue on trail [549] and [552].

The alternative route leads from Nova Levante by cable car Laurin I to the Frommeralm tavern and then by the cable car König Laurin I & II to the Kölner Hütte mountain hut. To return, simply reverse the route above.
