Hut-to-Hut Hiking in the Heart of the Dolomites

Strenuous

10h 28min 32,90 km 1794 m max 2563 m

For all Dolomite enthusiasts, a multi-day hut-to-hut hike through the picturesque holiday region of Seiser Alm is an absolute must. On this tour, you can discover the most beautiful places in the region and enjoy breathtaking views of the Dolomites, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The first stage leads to the Schlern, a mountain with a unique shape that is also known as the symbol mountain of South Tyrol. The next day, the hike continues to the Tierser Alpl, a private refuge with a distinctive red roof, and then to the Plattkofelhütte, which is located directly below the mountain peak of the same name, majestically rising up into the sky.

The start and end point of this tour is Compatsch on the Seiser Alm. To get here, take the Seiser Alm cable car or with line 10 from Seis am Schlern via Kastelruth. Parking facilities are available at the valley station of the Seiser Alm car.

The road to the landscape conservation area Seiser Alm is closed to private traffic from 9.00am to 5.00pm. During this time you can get to the Seiser Alm by the Seiser Alm cable car from Seis or by bus from Kastelruth. You can descend from Compatsch at any time.

Day 1:

The hike starts in Compatsch on Seiser Alm, which is easiest to reach by taking the Seiser Alm Cable Car from Seis am Schlern. After a short climb to Hotel Panorama or a ride on the chairlift, the trail descends to Saltner Schwaige. From there, the path winds up in many curves to the Schlern plateau and to the Schlernhaus (2,457 m). The impressive building is also known as the "castle in the mountains". Tip: The sunset on Petz, the highest point of Schlern (2,564 m), is an unforgettable experience. The summit can be reached from Schlernhaus in just 15 minutes. From there, you have a magnificent 360° panorama, which is especially breathtaking at sunset. Duration: 3.5 hours Distance: 9.2 km Elevation gain: 827 m

Day 2: The next day, the hike continues from Schlernhaus over Tierser Alpl to Plattkofelhütte, with only a few meters of elevation gain. Throughout the tour, you have a fantastic view of the Dolomite peaks such as Rosengarten, Langkofelgruppe, and even the highest mountain in the Dolomites, Marmolata. The trail goes up easily over the Schlern ridge towards Roterdspitze. From there, the path leads steeply downhill, and soon you can see the striking red roof of Tierser Alpl (2,441 m), which invites you to take a lunch break. The senior boss built the refuge himself and from there he established two climbing routes, the Maximilian and the Laurenzi via ferrata. In 2015, the hut was partially renovated and is now an architectural highlight of South Tyrol. The hike continues comfortably towards Plattkofelhütte by following the signposts. Duration: 4 hours Distance: 12.1 km Elevation gain: 499 m

Day 3: Plattkofelhütte is located in a quiet environment and is surrounded by beautiful nature. For a more intense nature experience, a special tip is recommended: the sunrise on Plattkofel. From the hut, it takes about 1.5 hours to the summit cross, and you climb around 650 meters of elevation gain. The effort is worth it, however, because you are rewarded with an exceptionally beautiful panorama. Afterward, breakfast in the refuge tastes twice as good. The hike then leads over the Murmeltierhütte to Saltria and back to the starting point in Compatsch. During this tour, you can feel the size of Seiser Alm once again. Duration: 4 hours Distance: 11.8 km Elevation loss: 705 m
