Kastelruth – Waidbruck

Easy

1h 54min 7,13 km 106 m max 1062 m

The hike begins at Krausplatz in Kastelruth and includes an ascent of 114 meters and a descent of 700 meters. The route is a total of 7.5 kilometers long and takes about 3 hours. The tour is also suitable for children and there is an opportunity to stop at Gasthaus Lieg.

After completing the circuit around Kastelruther Kofel and taking a look west towards the road to Waidbruck, you can see the hamlet of Tisens below Kastelruth, with a group of houses and a church with a pointed tower. Tisens is conveniently located on the north side of the mountains, is very sunny, and offers a wonderful view of the Schlern, Puflatsch, and the first peaks of the Rosszähne. Tisens is considered the birthplace of Sabine Jäger, the unhappy lover of Oswald von Wolkenstein. Although her ancestral home, which stands directly next to the church, is not historically documented, it is recognized as such by the locals. The church in Tisens is first mentioned in a document from 153 AD and is dedicated to Saint Nicholas. An exterior wall of the church is adorned with a well-preserved oversized mural of Saint Christopher.

After reaching Elendmüllerhof in the valley, we turn left and pass the Lungleser and Hofnerhof farms before reaching the village of Tisens on a flat and then slightly descending path. The path leads along the wooded slopes of Bühlen and past Gasthof Lieg to a junction where we leave the road and turn left. The path leads through dense forests, past Mayrlhof, and after about 30 minutes we reach Gollrain Hof, where we meet the path coming from Tagusens. Following this, we reach Trostburg after another 20 minutes. This is where Oswald von Wolkenstein was presumably born. The lords of Trostburg were probably a branch of the lords of Kastelruth. In the 14th century, the castle came into the possession of the Counts of Wolkenstein-Trostburg.

Inside the castle, you can visit the exhibition about Oswald von Wolkenstein. The return journey takes us back the same way or alternatively, we can take the 170 bus from Waidbruck train station to Kastelruth.
