Winter hike to the refuge Mahlknechthütte

The starting point of the hike is the mountain station of the Seiser Alm cable car in Compatsch. The hiking trail leads across vast alpine meadows towards Panorama. Then it goes past Goldknopf and Almrosenhütte, mostly on level terrain, and then slightly downhill to the Mahlknechthütte. The trail offers impressive views of the Plattkofel. For the return trip, you pass through Tirler to Saltria, from where the Almbus takes you back to the starting point in Compatsch.

The road to the Seiser Alm nature reserve is closed to private vehicles from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm. During this time, you can either access the Seiser Alm via the Seiser Alm cable car from Seis or take the bus from Kastelruth. You can leave the Seiser Alm by car at any time.

Bus service and timetables

The walk begins at the Seiser Alm mountain station in Compatsch. The trail leads, mostly on level ground, over vast Alpine meadows up towards Panorama and on past the Hotel Goldknopf and Almrosenhütte hut before leading slightly downhill to the Refuge Mahlknecht. This trail is absolutely overflowing with wonderful views on the Dolomites. The return walk leads past Tirler to Saltria, where the Almbus will take you back to your set-off point in Compatsch.
