Santner Pass Via Ferrata

This via ferrata is a classic in the Dolomites and is framed by rugged walls and towers with magnificent views. The via ferrata is relatively short with difficult Alpine passages that require Alpine experience.

Take highway's exit “Bolzano Nord/Eggental”, turn right direction Bolzano/Bozen, after about 0,5 km on roundabout keep left and head towards Val d’Ega (SS 241). Keep driving up to Ponte Nova. At Ponte Nova’s crossroads, turn to the left and continue to Nova Levante, Carezza and then in the direction of the Passo Nigra until the mountain station of the cable car Laurin l (about 40 min. from highway toll booth).

With the public bus line 185 via Tires or via Nova Levante with the line 180 or 184 with change to the line 185 at Paolina; bus stop: Malga Frommer Alm; online bus timetables: www.suedtirolmobil.info/en/

The tour begins at the mountain station of the cable car König Laurin i & II near the Fronza alle Coronelle/Kölner Hütte mountain hut (2,337 m). Trail [542] leads from here to the beginning of the via ferrata where the ascent is secured (300 m). The most difficult section is the ice chute (gorge). After crossing the ice chute, one arrives at the Santnerpasshütte mountain hut (2,734 m). Descent is via trail [542] to the Gartlhütte and Vajolethütte mountain huts. Continue on trail [541] and [550] via the Tschagerjoch ridge back to the starting point.

Difficulty: medium-difficult (B/C) - only with via ferrata equipment and helmet, sure-footedness and Alpine experience essential.

Caution: (Old) snow fields danger of slipping and falling! Only for sure-footed hikers with appropriate equipment.
